Manager's thoughts, words & action needs strategizing

Manager's thoughts, words & action needs strategizing. A Manager’s thoughts don’t necessarily define him, but his words and action does.

It is high time for you to start delinking your action and words from your thoughts in your professional life. First of all it is extremely important for you to know why the delinking is required.

Strategizing

As a manager, you will come across several instances or issues where emotional outbursts happen among the people you interact. At this point, as a natural gesture, it is quite possible to get carried away by your emotions and get hyper. You have a delicate situation where the stake holders who are involved can be of different nature – client, team, managers, organization, peers, delivery etc.

Remember, you cannot compromise your delivery for any of these stakeholders, because it is a proper delivery that keeps all
stake holders delighted. As a manager, you hold a responsibility of managing the situation well without aggravation of the issue. Many times, people make a mistake of getting carried away in tough situations and become a part of the problem.

Once you become a part of the problem, there is hardly any way you can resolve it. You have no choice other than to give the keys of your role to another person and just watch him resolving it. I am sure you don’t want this to happen to you!

So how to deal with this?

When you face an issue, invest time to assimilate your own thoughts. Observe the emotions until your heart beat and breath is normal, facial expressions are relaxed and there is a smile on your face.
Once you distinct yourself from the problem, spend time in strategizing on how to handle the situation. Believe me, this is very important exercise and should become a part of your regular practice.

By this way, you don’t translate your thoughts to words or action as it is. You learn to pause, articulate and define your words or action thoughtfully. This is called STRATEGIZATION.

Strategizing generally involves defining the same at 2 levels – one for immediate alleviation of the impact of the issue and the second one the permanent resolution of the issue. This is just like what you do when someone meets with an accident. First priority is to give the first aid so that the person gets relieved from the trauma and the second step is to take him to hospital for detailed medication.

Once both the strategies are in place, involve the stakeholders of the issue and share both the strategies. Identify people to execute both strategies and delegate the same.

Again, not to forget – Don’t become a part of the problem, because u need someone to oversee the implementation of the strategy till it’s closure.
Ironically, your role as a manager is delicate, complex and simple at the same time– handle it carefully and compassionately. Take decisions from your heart while managing your team. Take decision from your head while managing your client. Use your head and heart together while dealing with your peers, management and organization.

Happy managing!
